I KNOW that the stress of getting laid off from my job of 5.5 years, and the stress of starting a new job with a new boss has got my back acting up. I've been reading and re-reading Healing Back Pain for a month, and I accept the diagnosis, but this renewed, constant, throbbing pain has got me thinking about doing stretches again, but maybe I "expected" the pain to start when I stopped doing stretches. It's all so confusing and subjective...

So buy yourself a journal and go deeper with your answers to my questions.

eg

quote:
Not having a steady paycheck, not being able to pay the bills, fear of the "unknown" next job: new people and new things to learn, both of which I might not like. I'd gotten quite comfortable at my old job

This answer is a start but you can take it further, right back to what threatens your "inner child". Taking one of those things you said: new people - this is one that I struggle with too.

When I look deeper I find that for me it is about fear of being rejected by these new people and deeper than that it is about my fear of rejection from my mother. Of course I don't consciously fear that she is going to reject me on a day to day basis. She is a wonderful mother and has proven that to me and said she loves me throughout my life BUT she was pretty upset about becoming pregnant with me and I find that this fear of not being wanted has come up time and time again in my life.

I also have a huge phobia about dying which could possibly relate to thinking I didn't deserve to be here in the first place. Her feelings may have threatened my sense of survival. This is not to blame her but just to explore possibilities.

So that's an example of what has come up for me in journalling and a little bit of therapy.

I've got to say that I don't actually anticipate the process of journalling with much enthusiasm sometimes but once I actually sit down to do it I can just let the thoughts flow out. And yes, it's very purging. It's like all your mind/body wants you to do is acknowledge those emotions out loud and that helps you to move on from them. Then they build up again so you need to keep releasing.

Also what can help is putting down your pen during the journalling when you have got right down to expressing a basic fear or threat to your inner child. You can close your eyes and just feel the emotion. This can feel pretty uncomfortable and you will need to work hard on not focusing on the back if it is sore. Aim for 30 seconds of experiencing the emotion. There are lots of books/therapists out there that can help with this.

Keep at it! You need to prove to your mind that you will keep using TMS thinking no matter if it continues to try it's old back pain tricks for a while longer.

Thx Tunza...

I haven't tried journalling, though I'm open to it. I like the idea of "exorcising" or purging illogical subconcious fears.

> I know being laid off is awful for lots of people but what is it that bothers you most about it?

Not having a steady paycheck, not being able to pay the bills, fear of the "unknown" next job: new people and new things to learn, both of which I might not like. I'd gotten quite comfortable at my old job.

> what is it that pains you most about your new job or the process of starting a new job in general?

I worry about having to work with new people I don't particularly care for, or getting into a new job that's boring, or too busy.

It sounds like you're having a really tough time. 2 thoughts: are you journalling? Have you followed Fred Amir's TMS programme?

I know being laid off is awful for lots of people but what is it that bothers you most about it? And putting aside your physical pain for a moment what is it that pains you most about your new job or the process of starting a new job in general? These are the types of things you could journal about. You could do a mini journal entry now and answer these questions in a reply post (if you feel comfortable with that).

You've only just recently read Sarno so don't be too hard on yourself for not being able to cope with everything. Your unconscious is so used to distracting you with pain that it is going to keep trying it on until it realises you are serious.

My big "fear" right now is travel: sitting in a plane or car for anything over an hour or two, just cos it hurts so much. And I know the fear MAKES the pain, but I'm having a lot of trouble breaking the cycle. Any advice?
