I'm in the beginning stages of working off my TMS. Part of my exercise routine is that I do stretches 3 times a week. Should I stop doing them? Aren't stretches still "good for you" even if you accept the TMS diagnosis? I'm afraid of stopping them. Is that fear part of TMS? Confused...

Thx Peter.

I started doing them cos the physical therapist after a bad spasm said they'll "strengthen my core" and help prevent another attack. I think that's BS, but I still like doing them, they make me feel more limber. And what's wrong with tighter abs?

I think the key is to get over the fear of NOT doing them; in other words, if I miss a week of doing them cos of vacations, getting the flu or whatever, my lower back is still OK, it won't lead to a spasm.

I'm starting to get over an intense (but illogical) bout of fear and anxiety I was having of eventually being bed-ridden with a diaper and morphine drip; it was freaking me out, and made my back feel worse, which was the key to suspecting all this pain was psychological. I'm a daily Howard Stern listener, and a caller mentioned Dr. Sarno in passing, and thanked Howard for endorsing him. So I got "Healing Back Pain" about a month ago, and have made slow but steady progress since then. Like someone mentioned elsewhere, it's "two steps forward, once step back" for me, as symptoms appear more when I'm more stressed. I just got laid off after 5 and 1/2 years, so that didn't help. But I'm working on it... I'm having days of almost no lower back pain, but then it appears in my middle back and foot, something that NEVER happened before, just like everyone says.

I went to the doctor after 2 weeks of foot pain, just in case, and they didn't find a thing wrong, said it was just a "hiccup" or something, and referred me to a podiatrist, cos I have flat feet and she wants me to get lifts, which she says could help my back. I made the appt, but now my foot's feeling better and I don't think I should fall for the flat foot thing, so I'm cancelling. Onward and upward!

It depends on your intention for doing the streches in the first place. If you are doing them to "correct some structural problem" then this will not help with your recovery beacuse if you have TMS you do not have a structural problem to correct in the first place.

On the otherhand, if you are doing the stretches for general well- being and fitness and also to challenge the pain to let it know who's the boss then go for it full throttle. S T R E T C H.
