Posted - 03/16/2006 : 21:08:34 Hi everyone, I came across this site in my search for information on prostatitus. I've suffred through another disorder to which they could find nothing wrong with me. Back in 1999, I overdosed on antidepressants and sleeping pills coz i didn't want to live anymore. Before the overdose, i never had any physical problems other than my back pain which i got from a football injury and had that treated by a chiropractor over the years and a hiatal hernia/heartburn/reflux.. After the overdose, i developed severe intestinal pain and had many tests done. I had upper GI's, lower GI's, MRI etc and they found nothing, but i was in severe pain and had constipation and diarrhea. I went on for about a year before the specialist basically told me that nothing is wrong and I most likely had irritable bowel syndrome. Well couldn't take it anymore, i tried mind over matter, i tried many different pills. My pyschiatrist decided to put me back on the drugs that i had overdosed on. 6 years later and my smptoms are pretty much gone, I no longer take the drugs though and havent since probably September. My pyschiatrist said it might have been pyshchosomatic in nature. I now believe him.
Which leads me to the current problem of prostatitis, Ive had tests done and nothing has been found, other than a sore prostate during a rectal exam and the symptoms that come with prostatitis. This came about gradually i believe as the pain was not as noticable at first but over the past 3-5 months its gotten worse. I had xrays done in the beginning and they told me i had a kidney stone but i never passed one and have since had ultrasound and nothing was found in my kidneys.
Now to tie all this together, I've never been good at dealing with stress, it always affects me in a negative way. I have emotional issues and my psychiatrist says i have poor coping skills. I was wondering what you all think of this? Some people find it hard to believe that our emotions can make us sick, even when they cannot find anything physically wrong, and then they just tell you to get over it but its hard. I hope to learn some helpful information here, even if it cannot help me personally, but i hope it can. What book would be a good read by Dr Sarrio?
Thanks, and sorry for the long post |

Many do not believe that emotions can cause physical symptoms, but people here believe emotions can. I have made a full recovery from fibromyalgia using Dr. Sarno's treatment, so I have seen that even severe physical symptoms can have a psychological cause.
Dr. Sarno says that prostatitis is often, but not always, caused by emotions. He does not give a way to determine whether your case is caused by emotions. However, you have a history of disorders that Sarno lists as having an emotional cause and your tests have not found a physical cause. Both of these tend to indicate an emotional cause for you prostatitis.
To begin to study Dr. Sarno's ideas, I suggest Healing Back Pain. It's simpler than The Mindbody Prescription, which I found to be difficult reading at first. In particular, I think that the psychology section is more complicated than what's needed.
Good luck and let us know how it goes, Jim |

Yes I too recommend Dr Sarno's "MindBody Prescription" and "Healing Back Pain." Forget the title of the second book even if you don't have back pain, as its central message is still applicable to your condition. Read especially the treatment and psychology sections of these two books as this will provide the core of your understanding of what is happening inside of you and place you on the road to recovery.
Best wishes. |
