Posted - 03/09/2006 : 19:00:00 Hi I have been fighting neck pain over the past year and have been checking into this forum now and again. I often notice that people are too quick to assume physical problesms are TMS. I think that it is imperative to go to an MD first. I recently experienced this. On Tuesday night I had a few hours of annoying tinnitus. I know that Sarno believes that most of it it a TMS equivalent, so I did not give it much thougt. I woke up the next morning almost completely deaf in my left ear. I did go to the MD that day, had some tests and have been told that I have a viral infection that damaged my acoustic nerve. I am starting on a prednisone taper in the hopes of regaining some hearing. I know that alot of illnesses are stress related, but always get medical help first before attempting to treat yourself.

Hmmm....You seem rather convinced, yet you posted about it??? It would appear,as an outsider that you are CERTAIN that some things are outside the realm of the emotional, and you have drawn a line around them.Very cartesian. The words you used make me wonder regarding what you might actually think about anything being tms..."I am NOT going to take responsibility...or think I caused it in any way"
perhaps we read different books, but neither of those apply to back pain either....as far as I know it.
BTW..virtually every single thing in my life that I KNOW to have been emotionally generated OR fabricated could ALL be accounted for by docotrs and tests...they are never wanting in those particular areas.
I hope you regain your hearing...that is a Horrible situation.

Just to be clear, I was in no way trying to convince you of anything at all. I'm just speaking in general terms about my own experience. Naturally, not everything is TMS. Not nearly. |

Posted - 03/11/2006 : 15:23:57 Becca--I didn't mean to imply that your particular problem is TMS; in fact, no doubt it is the virus your mentioned. My case was very different. I had no hearing loss at any time, only the ringing. Mine was certainly psycogenic in origin. I hope you are doing better. |

Posted - 03/11/2006 : 13:20:06 Becca, What a horrible experience for you. I hope your ear is doing better and the treatment kills the infection. I agree with you - it is not always TMS. It is probably human nature for many of us to think it things are TMS as we had such amazing recovery from such terrible pain. After 12 year of excruciating sciatica, I am so relieved not to have it any more because of Sarno. I have found full relief from constipation, acne, acid reflux because of Sarno. I also used to get Tinnitus occasionally - not any more. However, there are conditions that are viral or bacteria related and your story is a good reminder for me - not to always think it is from my brain. Suz |

Posted - 03/11/2006 : 12:31:33 Thanks for the messages, but there is no way that anyone can convince me that absolute, complete hearing loss is TMS. Tinnitus is a pretty common problem-it can be stress related, it can be a temporary reaction to being in a loud environment or it can be premanent following hearing loss. But sudden unilateral hearing loss in all frequencies is not do to stress. My brain is not that clever or cruel. I did not do this to myself. And I am not going to take responsibility for it, think that I caused it in any way. I am not going to try to journal my hearing back. -R |

Posted - 03/11/2006 : 10:52:31 I continue to suffer this, that, and the other odd symptom. Generally speaking, they're all pretty convincing contextually. I run an extra two miles one day and have knee pain the next. I ride my kickbike (hard on the hammies) an extra twenty minutes and the next day have hamstring pain. I read that a certain supplement I'm taking can cause gastrointestinal problems and wham, the next day I've got stomach pain.
For me, it's vital to keep the big picture in mind and to learn from the past. These days, I just assume TMS. So far I haven't had cause to regret that. |

Posted - 03/10/2006 : 22:17:28 I've had experience with tinnitus. I mentioned it here another time. About 8 yrs ago my older brother, who has damaged hearing came to visit. He complained the whole time about the horrible ringing in his ears that had recently started. He was very distraught about it, and as the good hypochondriac I am, I took it all in. A few days later I was convinced I also had tinnitus! I'd like to say that the whole thing blew over after several days, but that was certainly not the case. Can you believe I was tormented by the ringing in my ears for over a year? I was absolutely convinced I had it and I went to doctors, had hearing tests (excellent hearing), even a brain MRI.
Well, this is one condition I am 100% sure was psychogenic in origin because it has been 8 yrs and I haven't had that problem since. |

Posted - 03/10/2006 : 20:42:21 I've had tinnitus for most of my adult life. Reading Dr. Sarno's books and this forum has reduced the pain in my back and neck by at lest 95% but has done nothing for the ringing in my ears.
i've come to the conclusion that I have damaged my ear drums from shooting thousands of rounds of ammo at the firing range without ear protection.
My ears ring all the time and never lets up. I don't know what to do about it but live with it. |

Posted - 03/10/2006 : 16:34:05 Hi Becca.
Well,I would agree 1000% on really odd things ...My wife was having low grade pressure in her head and double vision ..and surprise..Brain Tumor!!
I was scared,crying,wrecked....she was calm, cool collected....and we found out it was very typical, totally treatable and might not even need to be removed (which was the case) ..but it was important to know...that was 9 years ago..she's AOK
However, some of us have been doing this so long we get a sort of 'this stinks' suspicion when we get some odd, unexplained illness or symptom...like when My elbow feels bruised ONLY when I lay down to read, but doesn't even twinge when I throw a Baseball 200 feet.Or..coming down with a flu the DAY you were supposed to have to yourself, but ended up becoming obligated to serve others needs.
Since I took the approach that EVERYTHING that happens to me has to have some sort of psychogenic origin,I have had a lot less new stuff come up.
It would be unfair for me to comment on tinnitus as I have never had it,but it would also be remiss if I didn't notice that all my friends who do have it also have Back pain,or have had a history of muscular 'issues' in their neck, shoulder, hands, etc.
One of my best friends Listened to Sarno, got it immediately, recovered from his Backpain....and has been treating TMJ for the past 5 years with every medication known to man with no resolution. If I mention it might be TMS he would say 'no...the dr. is certain I have a blah, blah, blah"
However,in spite of her convictions, his Doctor has yet to 'fix' him....but he doesn't see it that way,and as a good friend,I just keep my opinions to myself
I also happen to know he has a wife that he is afraid to stand up to who constantly overspends, overbooks his life and denies him sex....which he will be frank and kid about, but refuses to actually confront.
It's not my job to fix him or help him see.....it is my job to find out where I am exactly like him,so I have the 'defenses' in good shape should some new 'odd' thing come down the pipe.
