I am back...Well, yesterday I broke down and went to see a doctor for the pain I have been having in my pinky.
As some of you may remember I am a musician and play guitar and bass! I also workout a lot and lift weights.
About a less then a month ago I started feeling pain in my pink tendent at is located on the inside of my palm.
Okay, so being a Sarno believer I just continued to play with the pain and also continued to work out as well.
So, about three days ago I noticed that my Inside of my palm and pinky are swollen.
I went to the doctor and she was cool she didn't make it like I was dying but told me I had a strained tendent. She also said that it was extremely swollen.
The remedy is to stop playing for a week or so and ice the swollen area. She also prescribed me an anti inflamatory.
I bummed because I followed Sarno's advise and continued to play my guitar and workout at the gym and now look what happened. My left hand pinky tendent is SWOLLEN.
I am going to follow the docs. order against my better judgement because I am scared that if I keep doing the things I was doing it will worsen my symptons.
If this was just TMS then why did my Pinky Tendent SWELL?
I do believe the body can get injured and sometimes rest, icing, and anti inflamtory to bring the swelling down is all one can do until the swelling goes away...
And like I said I PLAYED and WORK OUT with pain thinking it was TMS and look what happend to me..
Any advise out there from TMS suffers? I sure wish I had a TMS doctor to take a look at my strain and tell me what he things, but here in AZ we don't have such a doctor.
Thanks in advance Kalo! |

Hi Andrew2000! That is EXACTLY my same thought of which you mentioned above. With proper rest, and int inflamtory and icing and it doesn't get better then I know it is TMS!!!!
Thanks for your reply! At least my doctor didn't make it like I had some kind of Repetitive Strain Injury...She just simply stated that the tendon was inflamed and just need some proper rest..
Thanks again! |

Good that you got it checked out - can't hurt to give the rest/anti-inflammatories a try - hope that does the trick for you ... at the same time, I'd continue to think psychological, instead of physical and see how things go over the short term ... i.e., try not to dwell on it.
I think TMS has a tricky way of 'superimposing' itself over what may initially be a physical injury of some sort but prolonging it for extended periods of time ...

I'm a musician -- have had my share of tendonitis, finger/hand problems over the years at various times ... when something started it lasted way too long to be simply just a physical injury but back then, I had no insight, no knowledge of what else could be happening ...
You already have a base of knowledge and understanding that I wish I had then ... so instead of obsessing about which it is (physical or TMS) I'd follow doctors orders for now, but at the same time, keep doing the inner work that you're doing ...
Take the 'rest time' to think about any stress/tensions/frustration/anger you might be feeling, even about the music/playing itself -- is it bringing you joy? ... do you depend on it for a living? ... are you setting too high standards for your own level of performance? ... is it a hobby or do you wish for it to be more than a hobby? ... does that frighten you? ...
