Posted - 03/03/2006 : 07:37:23 I am not saying I agree or disagree with Dr. Wise. I have my own serious pelvic pain problems but even Dr. Wise's program does not help everyone. Not even the majority. I just wrote him to see what his responce would be. I agree that he has a lot of invested in his program. From his comments, however, I don't think he really fully understands TMS theory or Dr. Sarno's work.... |

Posted - 03/03/2006 : 01:48:49 I have gone through Dr. Wise's program, spent a lot of money on it, and it is a great program and he is very invested into it, and I agree that he is a good man. I have a lot of respect for him and his program, however I do believe that Chronic Pelvic Pain is "TMS." I strongly believe this because it helped me realize that I was able to simply shift my mind off of symptoms. THe Wise program has similar aspects, but its a little different and I believe in a way less scientific than Sarno's approach. It is great and it did help me a lot, but ultimately it was very time investing, and I know understand completely that Sarno's program can cure basically any stress related illness, and CPP is a stress related illness. Thanks.

Hey,
David Wise is a good man. After reading his response it seems to me that he either does not understand Sarno or is so heavily invested in his approach that he intentionally distorts Sarno.
Kevin I see that you caused quite a stir with your tms post in pro Wise forum. People on that forum seem to be quite responsive to Sarno ideas. You made my day.
Cheers.

I sent it to David Wise, PhD, who had chronic pelvic pain syndrome for 20 years, and here is is responce:
"Thank you for your email and attachment. I appreciate John Sarno's work on back pain. I was going to have breakfast with him the last time I was in New York. That being said I am a psychologist and understand the process of the somatic transfer of anxiety. I wish the person well who described his strategy with pelvic pain in your attachment. In my experience of treating thousands of patients with prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, this strategy mentioned in your attachment is not useful however theoretically viable it is. You cannot talk yourself out of trigger points in your quadratus lumborum that are causing severe testicular pain or trigger points in your anterior levator ani which are causing penile pain and post ejaculatory discomfort. In a way it is not helpful to tell people with pelvic pain to just get over it and focus on their psychological problems. Prostatitis/cpps is a psychosomatic problem involving psyche and soma... both must be addressed. I say this as someone who had pelvic pain for over 20 years, who has been symptom free for many years and who tried everything. I know the problem from the inside as well as someone who deals with many people every day from all over the world who are desperate. This idea of telling people to treat their pelvic pain as TMS as John does with people with back pain in my opintion is not a service to people suffering from pelvic pain because when they fail to do be able to help themselves, they can blame themselves for their condition.... which I don't think is kind or helpful. If you have pelvic pain, try this method yourself and let me know honestly how it works for you." David Wise, Ph.D. namaste@sonic.net |
