 Question about how to approach cold/flu

Hi all,
This past weekend I was pretty worked up about something work related and although I can't be 100% sure, it seems possible to me that I succeeded in working myself into a full blown cold/flu. I have been bed-ridden for three days and am feeling like this smacks of the old Mary, whereby I used to not only have tons of back and neck pain, which I've gotten good control of, but I used to get tons of colds and flu type illnesses. I have a question. Do I approach this the same way, and get myself out of bed and get to the gym and run, even though I am pretty sick, so sick I can't work? I mean, this is what works for the back and neck and I worked through it. So am I to put that same thinking to the test and force myself to exercise to repudiate the physical part of this or do I treat myself like anyone else would who just has a cold/flu and do rest and fluids? Thanks everyone.

While I don't think that an actual cold or flu is TMS, I agree that stress can compromise your immune system. I'll give you an example: before my wedding, I was worrying obsessively about every little detail. One of the things I worried about the most was, "What if I get sick?" As if on cue, the day before the wedding, I started getting a cold! (The wedding went fine despite that :-) I have no doubt that cold as at least partly psychosomatic in origin. By that, I don't mean "not real" -- but a real infection that ultimately had a psychological cause. Anyway, once you're sick, you do have a real infection. So I think you have to treat it physically -- i.e., I wouldn't go running or anything. But I think it can't hurt to be aware of the connection between stress and your immune system.

If you have a fever, you have an infection, so it should be treated as such. All of our symptoms are not TMS!

Over time you will learn to recognize the difference between "fake" flu-like symptoms that may be TMS-related, and the real thing.

I don't know about going mad on the exercise (maybe you could just start by getting up and about around the house.) The main thing is to challenge it mentally, though.

Sounds like you have the flu. I would take it easy, it's really going around here. I really believe that stress lowers your immune system thus leaving you more suseptable to contageous illness. Just try to be careful to recognise tms symptoms from real illness. I am the first to agree that it isn't always that easy.
