Posted - 01/24/2006 : 12:57:13 Hey all, I haven't posted for a while as my TMS symptoms have been non-existent. Yeah! If my sciatica flares up, I seem to get rid of it within a few hours now - amazing!
Unfortunatly, I broke the first metatarsal bone (the one below the big toe) 3 months ago. The doctor told me that the breakage would heal by the end of january and that I should be able to wear shoes then. I have started to wear flat shoes occasionally - but my foot is really painful/sore by the end of the day and for a few days afterwards. By now, it shouldn't be doing that.
I suddenly wondered if this could be the brain using the site as a TMS equivalent - or maybe it is legitimately still repairing. The first metatarsal bears 1/3rd of the body's weight -so takes longer than the other bones in the foot to heal. I wonder though.
Does anyone have any suggestions or input? I am dying to go back to doing my ballet again and really miss my exercise. Since I kicked the TMS, i have really wanted to run again and cannot because of breakage.
I wonder if I should just wear the shoes and ignore the pain. The pain is a sort of bruised soreness - not shooting like TMS |

Posted - 01/25/2006 : 08:46:42 Thanks, Stryder. I rethought what you wrote yesterday and wonder if there might be some truth in it. I am very focused on my foot right now as I really want to wear my shoes again and feel so frumpy in my sneakers (pure vanity - i know!) I wonder if the focus is creating the pain. The foot is certainly still a little more swollen than my right foot. I called and left a message to see the doctor and have an x-ray. I know they will think I am being neurotic - but what do I care?! I told the nurse that I am a worrier and want to see that the bone is healed. I am not going to go into the TMS thing. I think the visual will help me let go of the fear and especially of the focus. |

Posted - 01/24/2006 : 16:40:26 Hi Suz,
Yes, pictures are powerful and your mind has latched onto that.
If you have a follow up scheduled with your doc then by all means complete the process to ensure that you do not have a serious condition. Under normal circumstances bones actually heal stronger than the original, so 3 months in you are likley all healed up. The doc will often take a follow up XRay if they think it is warranted after listening to your description.
If your XRay comes back clean then you are on your way.

Posted - 01/24/2006 : 14:05:48 I don't know abuot that Stryder. The x-ray showed I split the bone straight down the middle. My foot was incredible blue and swollen for two months. Now there is no swelling - just bruised pain when I wear shoes. The doctor said it takes 3 months to heal and that I must ease slowly into shoes. I am thinking of getting another x-ray just to put my mind at rest that the bone has closed up |

Posted - 01/24/2006 : 13:15:27 TMS is just using your memory of the pain and fear of physical activity as a distraction. Its just re-playing the old pain location.
I dropped something heavy on my foot about 6 months ago and occasionally it just starts to hurt again, for no real reason. Its just TMS up to its old tricks.
Now if it were still injured 6 months later wouldn't it hurt all time? You would think so.
Just put on some comfortable X-training shoes and get back to your normal activities.
