Posted - 01/15/2006 : 02:26:51 Amazon has Dr Sarno's new book, 'The Divided Mind' available for pre-order now - April 1st publication date (USA and UK). I've just ordered a copy.
Something that we've discussed before - it might be worthwhile contacting TV stations and newspapers about this, mentioning our own successful experiences.
Does anyone have any ideas on the best time to get in touch with the media so that we can optimize our chances of getting them to feature this? I was thinking around the first week in March, but some of you may have first-hand experience.

Posted - 01/16/2006 : 15:02:07 Hi Anne,
My friend suggested The Times and the Mail as they both have health sections. I also thought the (London) Metro – it’s a freebie and very influential. I reckon 95% of London public transport commuters read it. I also suggested The Guardian. We weren’t sure whether to mail all at once or try a couple, see what response we got, then move on if no response.
What do you (or anyone else) think? I guess we should be targeting the same ones to have more effect (I mean for the national ones – probably no point you writing to the London one or us writing to the Scottish one).
Richard and Judy sounds like a good idea.

Posted - 01/16/2006 : 10:50:15 Well I have never been so excited about a book coming out. If it will be mostly about psychology that will be great. Maybe it will give people more to think about what is casusing their pain. But I cannot wait to read it. |

Posted - 01/16/2006 : 03:07:53 Thanks, everyone. I think it's a good idea for us to contact newspapers and TV stations separately, Hilary - if a few people do, it might make them take an interest - if they see that they are dealing with something that has been so helpful to people for many years.
I was thinking - The Guardian, The Press an Journal, my local paper, which covers the whole North of Scotland area and Richard and Judy on Channel 4. That last one would be a real coup, if we could get them to talk about it.
I can't find any information yet, Maryalma. Amazon has nothing - not even a picture of the cover and I found nothing other than the title and publication date on any site I looked at.
Peter, as you say, media outlets receive promotional material about thousands of books every year. and I think it's worth the effort to attempt to get this one the publicity it deserves. Those of us who have derived so much benefit from the earlier books have probably all gone through the stage of getting frustrated when people around us will not listen when we tell them about TMS - here's a chance to get lots of people to listen!

Posted - 01/15/2006 : 10:09:17 This new book will be almost all pure pyschology, and more specifically the pyschology behind what generates TMS. "Divided Mind: The Psychology of Psychosomatic Disorders" is a very appropriate title when one understands how TMS works and the forces at play within ourselves which generate physical symptoms. I suspect it will be his best work yet and a culmination of his life's work. Since he his 83 I also suspect he will pour more passion into this book than any other work as it may well be his last testament on this subject.
I have no idea what kind of buzz it will get in the UK, but if you can get the press release announcing the book you might want to fax it to various news outlets and possibly doctors whom you think may be receptive. Please keep in mind, however, media outlets recieve thousands of books a year that are looking for publicity so it will take persistence. Your motivations are most noble. |

Posted - 01/15/2006 : 09:23:22 Anne,
My friend and I were actually talking yesterday about starting now to write to the papers. We were discussing about getting coverage in the UK press about TMS generally - we didn't know the new book was about to appear and decided that if we waited for that it might come at a time when we were too busy. (When isn't one too busy, I know!) We had decided it was better to just go for it - otherwise we might not get around to it at all.
In light of the April 1st publication I think now would still be a good time to start writing to them, because I think it would take a while to prepare an article for publication. I've no idea how long - but better early than late. Did you want to write to them separately or would you like to join up with us? I'd definitely like to have more variety of stories - my friend and I are both RSI-recoverers and I don't want them to treat it as an RSI story.
Pete, I know the book will get lots of publicity in the U.S. but do you think it will in the U.K. too? We're keen to get more awareness here generally, so that's why we were planning to approach the papers.
btw The title sounds interesting.

Posted - 01/15/2006 : 07:52:26 Promotion is the job of the publicist of the book and they will have all the resources to promote this latest work. Remember, Dr. Sarno's books are bestsellers, and I expect this latest one will be no exception. |
