I know the idea is to abandon all medications. I dont necessarily feel that is a good thing in some cases. i tried to quit the Xanax i take for anxiety (it also helped my leg and butt pain) just after my mothers death, in the middle of major marriage issues, when my kid was flunking school etc. I believe my problem is NOT physical but it was a time of almost unbelievable stress for me. I decided to take a small dose of Xanax and my pain has decreased. I know i know, some will disagree. But the main issue is me not hurting. This medication helps at this time. I do plan to go off it at a later date.

Also, the major piece about meds is that you just don't want to constantly be on pain meds, anti-inflammatories, steroid shots, etc. because that reinforces the physical manifestation theory in your mind. You can take meds occasionally whether for pain or even for anxiety if that's your regimen. I take Tylenol on occasion when my neck aches, or when I have a persistent TMS pain that flares up. But I don't pop one every time anymore, which is what I used to do. I used to take Aleve every day a few times a day but then I learned that it's not doing a thing. Good luck.

To paraphrase a line from the movie Airplane: you picked the wrong time to stop taking Xanax!

While the goal of treatment is to elminate your pain without the need for medications, that doesn't mean you need to drop everything right now, no matter what. Your mental health needs to be taken into consideration, and using a mild sedative such as xanax on occasion during a stressful period is not the end of the world! Also, if you have been taking it consistently for a prolonged period (more than a few weeks), stopping it cold turkey is not a good idea at any time. When you are ready, the medication should be tapered off, with the guidance of your doctor.
