Posted - 12/16/2005 : 08:34:10 I have had lower back pain on and off for about 10 years. In the last couple years the pain has become constant. I have read Healing Back Pain 3 or 4 times, but it has not seemed to help.
I have been to the doctors and the only thing wrong is some degeneration in the last to discs in my lumbar area. I have been told that the amount of pain is not typical to the small amount of degeneration.
I do see myself in a lot of the personality traits that Dr. Sarno spells out in his books (I am reading The Mindbody Perscription currently). I have examined my entire life since I have started reading these books. While I have thought of a few things that could be causing inner rage I have not experienced any relief.
I've tried to think psycologically when I feel pain, I've tried to ignore it and get back to normal physical activities (only to have the pain get worse), I've tried talking to my brain, but nothing seems to work.
The only thing I have not tried is journaling, but it is hard to write a lot when you are lying down so much. Instead I just think of all the stresses in my life.
I fully believe I have TMS, but I'm starting to get discouraged.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Posted - 12/16/2005 : 18:29:48 another tactic is to read one of the other TMS-based books, such as those by Fred Amir. Sometimes getting a different perspective, or using somewhat different techniques, can be effective.
the journaling is key for most people, so get yourself one of those nasa pens that lets you write upside down (or, like the russian cosmonauts did, just use a pencil) and get cracking!
also, don't forget that a certain percentage of people require psychotherapy to improve, so if you try other approaches without luck, this would be another way to go.

It's sort of a weird deal,this TMS. When he says 'think psychological' it's sort of a mind-Fk because I was always thinking about all of my problems my whole life,right? Problems with my wife,problems at work,kids,money,friends,drama,drama,drama.
Most of us have always been introspective,over thinking sensitive people...he explains that in the personality type.If thinking about my problems was all it took to be rid of it,I never would have had it in the first place!
The 'thinking psychological' is sort of a diving expedition...WHY do I feel that way about my work?..because ( )
Why do I feel that way about my girlfriend/wife? ...because ( )
Why am I worried about finances ?....because ( 0
all those blanks are usually deep dark stuff we'd be embarassed to even post anonymously on a forum....we start to see a pattern in the because's and than we take the because's and ask :Why am I reALLY LIKE THIS deep down?
...and than inevitably you'll end up at some sort of juncture in your childhood or early development,and fortunately/unfortunately that's where this stuff HAS to go for us to recover.Remember...if it's truly repressed we never really can bring it to consciousness,but we might begin to get an impression of how the childish/narcissistic tyrant of a 4 year old is acting deep down inside of us.
You arre definitely on track....just keep on track.Also...how long has it been since you started to see yourself in the pages??? We have ALL gotten frustrated as we ALL have gotten it waaaaaaay before the symptoms let up,particularly the first time through the deal.

It takes a while. I understand how you feel – I think we’ve all been there! The books give the impression that you should get better straight away, but many people on this forum have taken a long time before they saw any improvement. For me it was a couple of months after really setting my mind to it before I saw any significant improvement. But everyone has different experiences.
Don’t try to go back to “normal” physical activity too soon. It’ll take a while to recondition yourself. Take it gradually.
Have a good read on this forum – there’s lots of good advice here.
