Nor

You are correct and I agree with you.

The "all in your head" response was from persons that a gave the book to, who, apparently did not really read the book.

I recovered completely from back pain five years ago and have been pain free in that area ever since. My current problem is my right knee which has been painful for almost a year and is just now starting to go away. Yes, we do revover at different paces. I can relate to that with my latest TMS pain experience.

Allen, you can suggest that some may read the book and assume such nonsense but I assure you that not all of us who feel the need to see Sarno fit into that category. As a matter of fact, I can't imagine why anyone would join this forum if they felt that way. I never thought that Sarno was giving me the "its all in your head" line. As a matter of fact, quite a bit of text in MBP goes into explaining that. The thing is, if you really "read" his book repeatedly and do the homework and still have symptoms after a long while, the next logical alternative is to seek him out if possible. I feel very fortunate to have seen him, despite the cost.

I've also been reading a lot of supportive members' posts who remind the reader that we all recover at a different pace. Perhaps not all of us can dig into our emotions w/o a little help.

The person who proof read Fred Amir's book also was rid of his back pain before he completed reading the book.

The proof reader that read Healing Back Pain found that his back pain was gone by the time he finished proof reading the book. He "read" the book which is a requirement to get rid of back pain. No one need pay Dr. Sarno $1,000. I didn't and most on the forum did't. Dave is correct. All one needs is in the book, accept the diagnosis and do the work.

May I suggest that some people do not "read" HBP. They simply scan it and say "He says that it is all in my head" or "It doesn't apply to me" or "I still have this question." In other words, they don't absorb the lessons in the book. I find it incredible when some say that Dr. Sarno doesn't offer any solutions. Page 70 and following are all about solutions.

Am I the only one that has the feeling that so many of the questions on this forum from new readers are the result that they don't realize that they have the answers in his book, and that such questions are unnecessary if the person had really "read" the book.

I agree about being rich. Sarno's fee for consult was $1000.00 and I just began w/a therapist who is $225.00 per session. Since I'm one of the "un-rich" ones, I may go broke getting rid of TMS!

I got my books yesterday! I got all 3 of them and I'm reading Mind over Back Pain first, since it was his first one.

The mention of OCD - has anyone looked at ADD/ADHD to see if it's connected to TMS?

Honestly, you won't learn much from Dr. Sarno himself that you can't learn by reading the books.

Some people need the "white coat" to take the diagnosis seriously, but the majority get better simply by reading the book.

Brandy,
Sarno will give you receipts to submit to your insurance company. Most of his fee will be reimbursed unless you have an HMO, I think. He's not that expensive when you add up the fees that we pay to chiroquacks, PTs and medicines that never work.

Good luck,
Polly

I'm a Howard fan also. I never heard about this book until he mentioned it. My boyfriend has OCD, which I didn't realize is a tms disorder also.

If we had to resolve all of our emotional issues to be pain free, then half of our country would be stuck in bed all day with terrible pain!!
JohnD Posted - 12/05/2005 : 11:37:10
It isnt necessary to resolve all issues to get pain relief. What is necessary is to understand the true nature of the pain, as well as a few other steps which you will read about in Sarno's book.

I just discovered Sarno from Howard's recent mention of him. I ordered Sarno's books (waiting for them to come in), from what I've read on the internet, I like the message.

The one thing I have trouble with is understanding how you're supposed to go back through your history. How do you resolve your issues? Isn't that the key? Resolve your emotional issues and the pain will have no reason to exist?

I found Sarno through Howard too. There's a great chapter in Stern's book MISS AMERICA called King of all Mental Illness which chronicles his bout with OCD, back and shoulder pain and his subsequent meeting with Sarno. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Stern may have been one of the first people to discover that OCD is a TMS equivalent.

Even if you're not a fan of Stern, you should just read this chapter (chapter 3) for a very humorous insight into the wacky world of TMS.

Or look at it this way ... given half a billion dollars by a company taking a huge gamble ... feeling the pressure to make that gamble pay off ... to please Mel Karmazin and all the others who are counting on him to grow satellite radio into a profitable business ... to hope and pray that his loyal listeners will follow him to a new distribution model that requires them to pay ...

If you "know" Howard it is easy to see why he would experience TMS during this time. Underneath his on stage persona is a human being who grew up with low self-esteem and a need for others to recognize his accomplishments. Money aside, he's taking a big risk with this move ... a risk to his feeling of superiority and invincibility.

Thank God for Howard...he's the reason I found Dr. Sarno!!
