Hi!
Onward goes the TMS work. Two days ago I developed this thightness/lump in the bottom of my throat. I can breathe and swallow fine, it's uncomfertable though. Lately, I've had quite a few TMS symptoms appear and I'm sure this one is no different. My tendency is to blame it on vitamins, antidepressants, etc., anything but the emotions. I'm trying hard to resist this temptation. But I ask you: has anyone ever experienced this symptom before? Anytime I develop a new one, I cannot help but feel a bit a fear. I know, this must be conquered; but for the time being...help!

I had that symptom for years when I was in my early twenties. I thought I had a tumor. The psychiatric term for it was something like globus hystericus - I probably am spelling it wrong. It is an anxiety/tms manifestation. I couldn't swallow food in a restaurant. I felt like my throat was literally closing up. I went to specialists. It is most definitely not harmful. For me, once I knew that, it went away.

Oesophagus spasms were one of the first TMS symtoms I did experienced in my life . I struggled with this for over 6 years without knowing what I was having . At some point I tot I had a Chatsky ring, at other times I tot I had a tumor or aneurysm around my oesophagus. It cinically turned out to completely disappear along with my benign cardiac arrythmia 6 months ago when I had a very mild whiplash that focused My TMS in my upper neck . This is now what i am struggling with ....
TMS is a VEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY nasty thing.....
keep the faith. It will disappear ....

I had to have esophogram done on me where I had swallow solution with dye in it and after I swallow it a series of x-rays are taken. Nothing was found. Eventually that pain went away. |

This message is revealing to me something that I have been dealing with for 4 years. I am on synthroid for hypothyroid (18 years!) I never felt any symptoms until 4 years ago when I felt pressure in my throat. Then I started getting panic attacks for the first time. I saw many doctors and received various tests and they said it was just slightly enlarged with nothing they could do to help. I have learned to live with it but at times my voice feels tired and sometimes in the morning in bed I swallow by reflex rather than by my own effort, this feels unnerving, but I try to ignore it. Since reading this page, I might just be experienceing TMS in my throat since I have it elsewhere, too. That's a relief because I really believed that nothing could be done except surgery someday. I think it is TMS also because it doesn't always feel the same. Sometimes I sing and my throat feels open and relaxed and other times it is tight. When this pressure started I was in a really hard time in my life, so it makes sense that it is stress related. Gosh, what a light it is to be aware after a 4 year trial. I'm even planning to be healed of the whole thyroid condition since it's getting pretty old taking medication all these years. Courage to you all. Special 1 |

Hey I have been in a similar spot myself. I had got to the point in my fight against TMS that my mind had given up on the back as a place to mess with me. Then I started having this weird sensation in my throat like there was something in the way or stuck. I could swallow fine and breathe with no trouble but it was very annoying. I went to a ear nose and throat specialist and had an upper GI scan with barrium. They could find nothing wrong and I decided to re read Dr. Sarno's book remembering the TMS equivalents that were mentioned and the situation and all of my worry gradually dissappeared. I believe there are many many TMS equivalents and it is our job to be mindful of what may be going on in our un conscious when these knew symptoms try and sneak attack and fool us. Good luck and keep the correct mind set. Tell your unconscious that you are not going to allow it to use these symatic symptoms to distract you from your emotions and that you demand it stop trying this as a defense mechanism and tell it you will deal with your emotions on an emotional level. Remember you are at war with your "childlike" brain and it is never rational or logical and all it thinks about is it self and pleasure.

I have this sensation every time I am in fight/flight mode. Whenever I am in panic/hypersensitivity mode. It's anxiety at its worst, at least for me anyway. |

I don't have any problem with swallowing pills. But I do sometimes have trouble swallowing or feeling a 'knot' in my throat. I believe it's directly connected to me not communicating something in some way. Anything from me "sitting back and taking it", me "making compromises without saying anything", not voicing my own opinions or concerns...
I find that it helps me to at least write things down. Even if I just take a small sheet of paper, write it down and then throw it away. I've also found that this occurs to open a new word document, type my thoughts and then delete them when I'm done.
I don't need to subject others to my communication to get the benefit that I need from expressing myself. |

i am unable to swallow any pills. even tiny ones. they must be crushed or chewed or liquid or i dont take them. sometimes my throat tenses up and i cant swallow food well but that doesnt happen often. I once went through a period where i couldnt swallow coffee well!!??!! its gone on for so many years i dont even mention it to my docs.

I get this symptom on and off very frequently. I was so worried about it at one point a few years ago that I went to the doctor and they ordered an esophogram where you swallow solution with dye in it and while you swallow they take a series of x-rays. All was fine. No tumor, no nothing. It persisted so I went to an ENT. He said he could find nothing wrong with my throat. I asked him if it could be due to stress and he said "yes, could be". So I quit worrying.
I still get it off an on almost every day. When I get tense or think about something bothersome it gets worse. It also gets worse when my throat gets dry. I think it is big time TMS. Mine came on during a time when we had to sell our house and move. It was my dream house and I very much loved it and was crushed when we had to sell it and move in to a small little dump because of financial reasons. Maybe I still have not gotten over that loss, who knows.
So I would say go get it checked and then just do not dwell on it.
I was sure there was some food stuck in there even though I could swallow, drink and talk fine..
I also have trouble swallowing pills though so maybe I have a rather small esophagus to begin with and it is my weak point for TMS to zero in on. I have many other areas also.....ha ha
Take care, I am sure it is nothing to worry about though.
I looked up the term globus hystericus and it fit my symptoms perfectly..

Hi Seth,
This sounds very much like a symptom that was often reported in the 1700's and 1800's where a patient would experience a sensation like a ball or lump in the bottom of the throat. It was a psychosomatic symptom (TMS).
I seem to remember that in a previous post you said you have trouble swallowing pills. I remember this because I have the same problem. You probably developed this symptom because you already have some mindbody weakness in that area. What probably is happening is that as your unconscious mind is sensing that you are becoming less afraid of your more familiar symptoms, it must create new ones to recreate the fear. It found a weakness in your throat.
It should go away soon. If not, get it checked just for peace of mind.
