All, I just found out about this site and this is my 1st post so sorry if there information already out there on this topic. I'm looking for some help / advise on my condition. I'm a 38yr old male. I've always been active in sports etc.. but 2 years ago i started having back & right leg pain. 2 Orthopedic doctors said i have a pars defect at L5 with grade 1 spondylolithesis and that's why i have right leg pain. Spinal fusion surgery is the only cure after trying physical therapy, injections, and Meds. However, the pars defect probably happened at birth or 20 yrs ago but with age it supposedily gets worse.

I have not been diagnosed by a doctor that i have TMS but i feel it's a possibility.

If there's anyone out there with a simular condition and they got better or any advise, i would appreciate hearing from you.

I've been extremely frustrated and sometimes depressed over the fact i may never get to normal. I'm considering surgery even though it scares the heck out of me.

Hi Zeke,

Go to Amazon.com and buy Dr. Sarno's books. They also sell his DVDs. Read them several times. If you have TMS you will recognize yourself in the books. Read as many of the post on this forum as you can. You will be able to tell if you belong here or not. There are people here who can give you good answers to your specific questions about TMS.

Stay as far away from surgery as possible.

Good Luck!

I don't have spondylolisthesis, but Io have the pars defect(spondylolysis). I have gotten beter with my pain. Those doctors sure do know how to put the fear into you. I go to church with a lady who had grade 3 spondy and she had surgery and still no better.

I was diagnosed by a chiropractor with grade 1 spondylolithesis. He said I shouldn't run or do any martial arts again. I also saw orthopedic specialist and he said to do some special exercises but could resume any activity that didn't hurt. He admitted that some people have this condition and never experience pain.

Most recently I saw Scott Brady here in Orlando, FL. After looking at xrays and checking me out he said that I have TMS. I'm not pain free yet. I'm back running but I haven't resumed my old levels. But then that may have been the problem. I was training for ultras, training for 3rd degree black belt, long hours at work and trying to be a perfect spouse & dad. You can't perfect at everything. The training part was easy but dealing with the emotions of trying to balance it all may taken a greater toll on my body.

With aikido we're taught to work "beyond the physical" and "mind moves body". These are just my thoughts and my experience but I thought it might help you to know that your may have TMS. The hardest part for me was seeing the xray kept me focused on the physical and it took me a while to move past that.
