Posted - 11/06/2005 : 12:24:37 I have had chronic neck and shoulder tension and pain for many months. I would like to think it is TMS and not a structural abnormality However, my pain does not move around at all. It varies in intensity due to emotional stress, but it is always in the same place. It does not come and go. Has anyone else had this situation? |

Posted - 11/08/2005 : 08:26:30 My neck and shoulder and back spasms/pain is all TMS. It comes on like a hurricane when I'm sick with worry or having anxiety. You have to trust in this and do the work. My pain stays away until I start catastrophizing. |

Your situation is not uncommon. If TMS sets in and has you distracted by causing you grief (pain) in one location, there is no real reason for the pain to move around.
Once you have made the mental connection between your emotional state and your pain, and start doing the TMS work, the pain may move to another location when it decreases from the original spot.
Everyone is different, and there is no hard and fast rule that you will or will not have pain moving around.

Posted - 11/06/2005 : 21:25:19 Hi Becca,
I have had chronic neck and shoulder pain and stiffness similar to what you describe for at least 20 years. It is constant and always in the same place from morning till I go to sleep. It is TMS. These symptoms are now about 60 percent better since I started DR. Sarno's therapeutic plan. Believe me, that 60% is huge. It continues to get better slowly. For me it is so ingrained in my daily thinking that the reconditioning process is slow.
The chances are extremely high that you have TMS also. From your post it seems that you have not yet accepted the TMS diagnosis. I suggest you take the full leap of faith. Do not expect a quick resolution. You must understand that this is a difficult battle with a tenacious rival. You must be tenacious also.

Posted - 11/06/2005 : 15:04:30 Each person has their own pain patterns. For some with TMS the pain moves around and for others it stays in one place. Also, for some the pian comes and goes and for others the pain is constant. The variety of patterns are virtually endless. Almost all neck and back pain are due to unconscious inner tension and anger. The whole purpose of the pain is to keep you focused on your body and away from your inner emotions. Please share with us what is going on in your life. We promise we will not be judgemental as we are all in this together. If you feel shy, them begin to write in your own personal journal on a daily basis and concentrate on your feelings and emotions. Read the psychology and treatment sections in Dr. Sarno's books over and over again until it begins to sink in.
