Has anyone considered this to help un-learn TMS? I have heard it works great with anxiety and other problems.

Thanks
Alan.

I look at hypnosis as being the same thing as skilled relaxation. The goal is to reach the alpha state for whatever the purpose--relaxation, solving problems, quitting smoking, etc. You can do it until you're blue in the face and it would never cure TMS, but once you have diagnosed your problem as TMS, it can help to calm your mind and ease muscle tension.

I don't think it would hurt your TMS therapy progress unless you started thinking all the wrong things, such as doubting the psychological cause and all the same old stuff that gets repeated here 100x's over. If attempting to relax were harmful, humans would be in much worse shape than they are now.

When it comes to hypnosis Dr. Sarno is far from being alone in his opinion. It's a questionable technique, to say the least. "What works and what doesn't" is also not so cut and dry, because something could work due to the placebo affect.

There are no quick fixes when it comes to TMS. Even if hypnosis was to magically uncover all of your sources of repressed emotions, the TMS would not go away. It's about reconditioning yourself, not about solving all of your psychological problems.

Very well put, Celestica. I think it is good to keep an open mind and not place anyone on a pedestal. The standard should always be, what works and what doesn't.

I used hypnotherapy for childbirth and found it helpful. My psychiatrist, who is an expert in psychosomatic medicine, says that both hypnosis and meditation can be used to access the unconscious. I would try it, but with caution as to finding someone reputable. Most good therapists will help a problem with 1-3 sessions total and should give you a CD to do it at home. Avoid any "past life" hypnotherapists or new-agey ones if possible.

I know it goes against what Dr. Sarno says, but he can't be 100% right all the time. I mean, he is a man, and not a god. Just my opinion of course.

Good luck and health,

Amelia.

Dr. Sarno dismisses it outright as it does not get to the core of the problem. See pages 95 and 133 of Healing Back Pain. He does admit it will give temporary relief but, as Dr. Sarno says, it is not a cure. It is good if you are treating pain but TMS treatment is not a pain treatment program. Dr. Sarno says: "That would be symptomatic treatment and it's poor medicine. I treat the disorder which is the root cause of the pain. To the best of my knowledge, hynosis would not contribute to that process." (page 95 - HBP)
