Posted - 10/20/2005 : 04:18:58 Hi all, I have been suffering from pain in my right arm, shoulder, hand and upper back on and off for 3 years but it has got really bad over the last year. I have tried soooo many therapies; osteopathic, chiropractic, Egoscue therapy, Trigger point therapy, specialist RSI therapy. Nothing has eleviated my pain. In fact since I last went to the chiropractor a week ago I have had so much more pain, especially in my lower back (lumbar region) and an escalation in the burning and tingling in my upper back. I am getting really desperate. I read the Sarno book (Mind Body Prescription) and although I did follow it through completely my pain never fully went away, just dipped and then came back with a vengeance. I've been told I've got misalignment of my spine, so not sure whether to give Sarno another try or not (been to hospital and apparently my x-rays were normal as were blood tests). Please help! |

Posted - 10/21/2005 : 18:38:27 Thanks, I actually have seen so many pictures of my spine I am used to it, and I don't worry about it anymore. I accepted that it is the way it is, and I am thankful it doesn't hurt. It really looks like it should hurt but it doesn't at all! Still, new symptoms try to sneak up on me once in a while, sometimes I just can't relate what the emotion is. |

The same thing happened to me years ago. Good luck NOT obsessing about it!

Posted - 10/21/2005 : 17:44:13 I recently ran a marathon, and had some chest pain after, and went to the hospital, where they gave me an ekg, and a ct scan. All I had was a torn chest muscle causing some discomfort. I was relieved. When the doctor saw my spine- he said, man, you have a weird looking, crooked, funny looking spine, does it bother you? I said no. Nothing like having a doctor laugh at your insides. My point is that I have the most misaligned, funny looking, disc bulging spine this er doctor has ever seen, but it doesn't hurt anymore, since reading dr.sarno's book. I had a recent tms relapse, of arm weakness, which, surprise, surprise, went away when I got legitimate chest pain. My chest is now also better, and I am going back running this weekend. |

Posted - 10/20/2005 : 06:53:05 All of your symptoms sound like classic TMS to me. It is quite certain that misalignment of you spine is not the source of your pain regardless of what these doctors tell you. I really suggest that you read Dr. Sarno's two books Healing Back Pain and MindBody Prescription. After you have read them both, especially the parts that deal with your symptoms, then go back abd read the psychology and treatment sections of both books over and over again. I also recommend Dr. Sarno's educational video which can be ordered via this website: http://www.healingbackpain.com/index2.html
You have to convince yourself through education that the source of your pain- even though it is quite real - is not of a physical origin. You must remind yourself that the pain is serving a function of distracting your attention from inner emotions buried deep within your unconscious mind. More details in the psychology and treatment sections in Dr. Sarno's books.
I also highly recommend Monte Hueftle's TMS book "Get Rid Of The Pain In Your Butt Now!Pain Relief for your back, legs, knees, feet & sciatica," by Monte Hueftle. It is by far the best TMS book I have ever read after Dr. Sarno's on this topic. You can download the book for $12.95 at:http://www.runningpain.com You have to pay via paypal. His chapter 6 and 7 are by far the most essential parts of the book and he really understands the role of the pain and how to overcome it. This is the book Dr. Sarno should have written instead of his MindBody Connection as it is written for those who seek more practical advice of how to get better and getting deeper into the psychology of TMS. Monte Hueftle had been pain free for over three years after basically being diagnosed with: herniated disc, pinched nerves, sciatica, curvature of the spine, and leg length discrepancy, fibromyalgia, plantar facitiis, and more and wading his way through the medical establishment with no relief.
