Posted - 10/16/2005 : 12:10:41 1. If I have a pain all the time, does that mean I have negative emotions all the time, which my brain does not want to experience? What do you think?
2. I am asking since being away for couple months with no stress, I was free of pain 90% of time but was frustrated, sad etc.!! (even there was no "real" reason for that). When I returned the pain returned. I wanted to be happy and enjoy!! Maybe I developed it in the first place because I just wanted to be happy. And have happy life, but could not accept that is not possible. What do you think?
3. If I change my set of believes (expectations from life that everything must be all right) would that lessen the pain? I know most of you said I don't need to change anything, it is enough to switch the attention to emotions instead of thinking about pain. What do you think?
4. Can it be that I put myself under the pressure even if I don't need to? (if I am at work I understand, I am not so much in control (let's say that), but if I am at home, I have some kind of control, for example I can take a rest if I had a sleepless night instead of making lunch for 2 hours and being frustrated and in pain). Why do I choose this? What do you think?
I would appreciate if you can get me the insight on this. I am new in this and would be the happiest person in the whole world if I can get rid of my pain!!!

Thank you for your time to answering to my questions. I think I am close to get in reality what you said. I started my journaling and already feel better. |

The important thing is to recognize the role the repressed inner emotions are playing and how the pain is there to keep your attention diverted away from these emotions. Please read the psychology and treatment sections over and over again in Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain and The MindBoday Prescription and allow the message to sink in. Behavioural modification is not a TMS treatment modality, although you may want to change certain personal behaviours for your own personal well-being. Think psychologically. Think what is inside of me that is going on that is inducing this pain. Remember, the main culprit, according to Dr. Sarno, is rage, which is accumulated anger over a long period of time. Also, think about your own personality traits which may cause inner stress and anger, but of which you may not be consciously aware.
Remember also that the pain is the brain's way of trying to fool you into thinking the pain is due to a physical or structural problem. You have to confront your brain by repuditating this message and affirm over and over again the TMS existis only to distract your attention from your inner emotions...... |

Posted - 10/17/2005 : 09:49:24 Dave, you are apsolutely right! My husband knows best how much I think and anylize ;) He is the one who tells me to simplify my life.
I think as well that over-analyzing is probably the distraction to my healing. I will follow your advice (and Sarno's as well). I will start journaling today!! Thank you!!!

There is no rhyme or reason to TMS symptoms. It is different in everybody, and we will never know exactly what brings them on. Attempting to figure it out just adds to the frustration.
Being over-analytical is a symptom itself. Follow the treatment suggestions in Dr. Sarno's book. Think of TMS in simple terms. Try to experience all emotions, especially the negative ones, when you feel them (break the habit of repression).
Remember, the symptoms stem from the things you don't feel. Internal pressures that you are not aware of. Try to become aware, but don't get preoccupied. The most important thing is to accept the symptoms as psychogenic and not as a physical problem. |
