I'm a month into this and am having some problems. I have had cronic back pain for 10 years. I got the books and since reading, journaling, watching the videos and listening to the cds, my back pain has gotten so much better. I did have some pain show up in different places but went away really quickly since I knew it was TMS. Well, I had my in-laws here for a week and it was so stressful. I don't get along with my mother-in-law, she had me so mad and tense the whole time. I did keep up with my journaling, reading and everything else you're supposed to do. The day they left I was brushing my teeth and felt a sharp pain in my hip and it has been there for 2 1/2 days now. I know it is TMS, geez, I was just brushing my teeth! anyway, I had to take a pain killer just to get to sleep last night. My question is, is this just all part of the process? Is there something more I should try to do? If not, can someone who has had this same thing happen to them let me know so that I don't have an anxiety attack over this.

I was doing so well, and I know for sure I have TMS, there is no doubt, I buy the diagnosis and the treatment and I am doing it faithfully, I also don't think I need therapy, I know what most of my problems are, so can anyone help?

Thanks,
Gaye

Sounds like you have a handle on what is going on. Yes, this sort of "relapse" event can happen when you brain decides you need to be distracted.

Yes, this has happened to me many, many, many (you get the picture) times.

There's always more you can be doing to recognize, vent and/or otherwise deal with your anger so it is not repressed. Try yelling in the car when you are alone and no one can hear you.

thanks for the info. I did take your recommendation earlier and got Dr. Howard Schubiner's workbook and cd. I have found them to be really helpful and the workbook, as you say, gets you digging around in your brain for awhile! I know I have issues with my MIL and it's been going on for almost 6 yrs., around the time that the low back started hurting. I'd had mid and upper back pain for 4 yrs. previously and so just attributed the low back pain to it as well. I realize I was wrong on all my assumptions up to this point. In fact I know the reason, I just don't know how or if I even need to resolve it with her in order to get better.

It is interesting to note that just the fact of putting these thoughts on this forum has taken away some of the stabbing pain. I will check out the worksheet and book you suggested.
Thanks,

Gaye

You seem to have done very well up until now with the work you are doing. This is to be congratulated and is proof postive that the source of your pain in emotional and thus you have TMS. Remember, the role of the pain is to act as a distraction to keep you focused on your body and not on your emotions.

Since your pain seemed to re-surface around the time of your in-law's visit, you might want to do some journaling around your feelings and dealings towards your in-laws.

I found a good book to read regarding a unique method of dealing with various thoughts that enter our minds, which can end up tyrannizing us and make our lives miserable, and deconstructing the meanings we place around those thoughts so that we can see more clearly. The title of the book is "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie." Her website is: http://www.thework.org The recording of the book is much better and more powerful but it is more expensive.

For example, you may want to examine you thoughts and attitudes towards your mother-in law (or any other person) using the following worksheet: http://www.thework.org/TheWorksheet.asp

Of course the worksheet will make more sense after reading her book first. Every thought, belief, attitude, situation or person etc which you hold to be true will be challenged with the four basic questions. See them at: http://www.thework.org/FourQuestions.asp

It is a powerful tool and will keep your focused on pyschological and not the physical. Be careful, because everything you assumed was true will be challenged. And I mean everything. And you yourself, not Byron Katie or anyone else, will be doing the challenging.
