Posted - 09/24/2005 : 04:27:09 Peter, that article you refer to is one that helped me to recover from a really painful back TMS episode last year. I was spending most of the weekend lying on the floor for hours with lots of muscle spasms and when I read that article I forced myself to get up and go grocery shopping. From then on it just got better.

Posted - 09/23/2005 : 20:25:20 Here's an old Newsweek article from last year from the series "The Great Back Debate" which gives a section to Dr. Sarno.

Posted - 09/19/2005 : 09:17:20 A belated thanks for these links Ralph.
The first one in particular I found really thorough and helpful. Interestingly, the author of this article suggested the underlying psychological mechanism is our "fear of not being good enough." which really is the same as low self esteem.
Here's another link I came across. It's to an interesting and extensive article on low back muscle pain, by a Vancouver massage therapist. He refers to and quotes Sarno extensively but uses the term 'myofacial pain' instead of TMS, and adds some of his own insights. Despite being a 'physical' health practitioner his basic premise is that most back pain has roots in stress, fear and the super responsible personality, saying "I can tell you that I have yet to meet a back pain victim who was slovenly, selfish, laid back and underemployed!"
