Posted - 08/26/2005 : 20:22:44 Hi everyone -- this is my first post, and I am so glad that this forum exists. Thanks for creating such a supportive community around TMS. In 1999, I developed pain and muscle guarding around my left back, shoulder, and arm, as well as tingling in my left hand. An MRI showed a herniated disc around C6-C7. The eager doctor gave me a script for phsycial therapy and almost salivated at the idea of surgery in case the physical therapy didn't work. Having heard of Dr. Sarno's work from my parents, both of whom worked with him to resolve their own back problems, I was able to resolve the pain and muscle guarding and made a full recovery.
Now, six years later, the same symptoms are back and I'm in a lot of pain. For many reasons, I am certain that TMS is the culprit. What scares me this time is that I am noticing significant weakening of my left arm, and that scares me. I understand that TMS can produce such weakening, but I also remember the words of the eager surgeon about "permanent muscle loss" and "nerve damage." I was wondering if anyone has any experience with recovery from such supposed nerve-related symptoms and if anyone has any advice about how to maintain my TMS resolve in the face of such unsettling symptoms? Any advice will be most appreciated!

Posted - 08/27/2005 : 07:59:14 Hey jonjon- Don't give it a second thought. Treat it the same as your backpain. It's just another symptom. I had severe weakening of my right arm before my big back attack. My right hand was also very weak and I kept dropping things. I even had wierd symptoms on that side of my face and it was very frightening. The symptoms all left with the pain. They revisit every once in a while in a very weak rendition and are very shortlived. Don't doubt yourself and continue on with your psychological work.
