I have had burning type symtoms in my feet and at times in other parts of my body on and off for eight years. I must have seen ten doctors in total over that time. Thinking psy. and reading Dr. Sarno's books have helped a great deal. (neropathic drugs no help) HOwever I am at an impase. I am experiencing a great deal of job related stress lately and my nervous system is firing away. My theory is that my nervous system is very sensitive to any kind of stress or anxiety. (one day I will be burning on and off all day the next day I feel 90% better, go figure) I had read that your nervous system can become overly sensitive and that changes can be permanent or not. Any thoughts as to how TMS fits in? Has anyone had a similar experience and have been able to de-sensitize their nervous system. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Don, I (we all) do the same thing. Human nature to slack off when "coast is clear".
I just got a hypnotherapy CD for deep sleep. Trying it to see if it helps. Going to give it some more time.
Good luck, Dan

Dan,
Thanks I will give some of your suggestions a try. In the past I tried hypnotheraphy which helped a great deal and from time to time I go back to tapes of my sessions. My problem is that I do have resources however I don't take time to follow thru on a daily basis. I usally use strategies when I have a bad day. On other days I might distract myself by lamenting about the pain but not thinking about the stressors/anger in my life. I think the cure is in the follow through.

Dan you mentioned that you have found lots of things that helped. Any words of wisdom? What physical symtoms have you experienced from GAD?
Thanks again for listening or I guess I should say reading.

Don

What has worked for me - aerobic exercise is a must, meditation (any type you are comfortable with), some medication to help sleep better, of course Sarno's books, book Embracing Your Fear-Bemis & Barrada and a couple of freebies
CD-Silva Centering meditation. Available off the net free

EFT- http://www.emofree.com. Free 70 page manual that describes technique. Works best for specific trauma events, food sensitivities, tougher for GAD.

Thanks for responding. It helps to know that other people are experiencing similar hurdles. I have been dx with neuropathy, fibermyalgia (sp?), plantar facitis. Everyone seemed to come up with a different conclusion. I have been to the U. of Chicago, the Mayo clinic, and seen pain specialist, podiatrist, and too many neurologists. I only found relief after throwing my pills away and reading Dr. Sarno. At times I go back to one of my previous dx but that only spells trouble. (anyone do that?)
Laura as to your question I have seen a psychiatrist and I was dx with GAD just recently. I don't experience the symptoms you describe but I could easily see someone experiencing Anxiety being lightheaded or dizzy. My doctor mentioned a book "The Anxiety Cure" by DuPont which has helped me in my understanding. I alos think that the ideas presented in Dupont's book go nicely with Sarno's. I'm trying to blend the two in my recovery.

Hi Chicago,

For years, I was a classic example of someone who fell for the "sensitive nervous system" BS. Whenever I faced even minorly stressful events, I would fall into pieces and blame my "sensitive nervous system". Since reading Dr. Sarno's Mind Body Prescription, I have improved dramatically. But it took some time. Its funny, before I developed TMS, I didn't have a sensitive nervous system and after I applied Dr. Sarno's principles I don't seem to have a sensitive nervous system.

I believe that we all respond in some way unpleasantly to stress.
I think that the unconscious mind can magnify these responses in individuals who will believe that their nervous system is weak.
This is a ruse that the unconscious mind has been using since the nervous system was discovered. See "From Paralysis to Fatigue, A History of Psychosomatic Illness in the Modern Era" By Edwin Shorter.

I obviously can't diagnose you in an email but there is probably nothing wrong with your nervous system. There are some people who are more sensitive than others but I feel this is more an indication of there personality type than any problem with their nervous system.

Tell your mind that you are aware of what it is doing and you will not be intimidated or fooled any longer. I also have found that journalling out stressful events really helps. Especially work related ones.

Chicago and Dan,

Do either of you ever suffer from lightheadedness or dizzy/floaty sensations in your head from the anxiety? I too was diagnosed with GAD many years ago. I'm anxious about everything and lately I cannot seem to shut my brain off. It just wants to think 24/7 and I'm sleeping maybe five hours per night.

Chicago, my nervous system is very sensitive to stress and/or anxiety as well. I think most TMSers are that way. Someone also mentioned that dizziness and lightheadedness (neurological symptoms) are from oxygen deprivation in the brain. Makes total sense to me.

I wish I could figure out how to desensitize my nervous system. I'm working on that through meditation and yoga, and trying to catch myself when my breath is shallow (something that was recommended to me a couple years ago that I am finally practicing now).

I have been diagnosed with GAD, generalized anxiety disorder and have bad periods. During bad periods am very sensitive to anxiety. Lots of things help but nothing has stopped as yet.

Have you had a diagnosis?
Dan
