Three weeks ago my left index finger swelled up around the middle joint. I ignored it for three weeks, but it didn't get better and it's pretty painful. As I'm left handed it is a bit of an inconvenience.

Anyway, I decided that it must be some sort of infection and visited my doctor. She didn't think infection - arthritis in the joint is more likely she thinks - although it doesn't follow the usual pattern of finger joint arthritis, according to her.

She has sent off blood to check for 'the markers that can indicate arthritis is present'. Do any of you know what that means?

She is also sending me for an x-ray.

I really do not want to go down the road of anti-inflammatory medication - I wish it would just go away - TMS style!

I went to a prestigious fat farm a few years back in Arizona for "Arthritis WeeK". Listened to lectures by three arrthritis expert doctors who had all written books on arthritis. Conclusion: "arthritis" is a loosely used generic term given to about a 100 different ailments. Modern medicine doesn't know what it is, what causes it or how to cure it. They just "manage" it with analgesics, exercise, and a huge industry of snake-oils and quackery.

During breaks the doctors chit-chatted amongst themsleves about their own physical ailments and their past and future surgeries to treat them. I decided I was in better shape than the docs and could hardly wait to get out of there, (the food was great though).

Rheumatoid arthritis is a completely different disorder from osteo-arthritis. It is an auto-immune disorder. It was historicaly relegated to the rheumatologists, by default, because it is a disease of the joints.

I remember my Mom had arthritis in her hands. We got her a stationary exercise bike she rode every day for a half hour. Her arthritis went away!

My conclusion is that arthritis is mostly TMS--normal aging of the joints akin to Sarno's gray hair of the spine. In my mother's case, I theorized that exercise and the increased circulation cured it.

As we age I think it takes a little longer to get our joints warmed-up for physical activity, about 5-10 minutes. If we can overcome the fear of movement that has been created by the voo-doo doctors, we can get our synovial juices going in our joints and have a good time.

I had the test to check for rheumatoid arthritis. It's called sed rate. That tells whether or not RA is present.

Blood tests are used to determine the presence of arthritis. Bone scans are also use as are CT scans and MRIs. I had all these done myself and nothing showed up.

It is best to wait and see what comes up in your tests before jumping to conclusions. TMS may be the source of your trouble, but in some cases - like clear indications of inflammation - it still has to be medically treated with medication.
