Dear all,

Sometimes physical symptoms are intensified due to physical triggers - ie walking, running, bending over, sitting, laying etc. These are not the real source of the pain but the brain has been programmed or conditioned to associate the onset of pain with participating in these activities.

There are also emotional triggers which can bring on an attack of pain. I have to deal with what I consider to be an emotional trigger this Wednesday and it is already bringing me a lot of physical agony just thinking about it.

My wife's sister is coming to stay with us for awhile and my wife has to go and get her in another city which leaves me alone for several hours. This is creating a lot of anxiety in me, and trust me it is not funny.

What has been the experience of people here dealing with emotional triggers and working on averting the dreaded attack?

Peter

Emotional triggers should make you laugh and realize how obvious TMS can be.

Then you just say to yourself, "OK, obviously this is about <....> let's examine those feelings." Try to figure out why the event is making the child inside you angry.

I'm not sure what you mean by your wife leaving you alone. Why does this provoke such anxiety?

I have these emotional triggers around holidays. Typical stress-inducing times of the year I guess, even though I never thought so. For me, it's the anticipation of the day, the event or the situation. What if this, what if that happens. On and on. As I wrote July 3rd, I needed help in averting an attack. I guess what people suggest is just being aware it's a TMS like response is helpful because you're on to it and are aware. I tried to say to myself: I know I'm anxious but I won't let it go to my back, wrists, etc.
