I thought I'd ask the rest of the forum if we could get together and please just ignore the troublemakers..

If we continue to foolishly respond to this nonsense then we're only getting what we deserve,,

Well said, Stryder, but I'm beginning to think it's just not possible. There will always be some who aren't aware of what we're trying to do, and some who simply can't resist the call to arms..

What should be crystal clear though, is that these poor hapless idiots are not interested in any sort of dialogue. They can't be insulted, shamed, or persuaded. All they want is to piss people off. Why give them what they want? Why make them happy? Shouldn't we be trying to make them unhappy so that they'll go away?

I know I'm preaching to the choir mostly, but it was good to get it off my chest

Thought I'd give this a massage in view of the recent activity on the "unbearable" thread..

Long sigh.

Hi all,
I should have read this post first before responding to the thread on the divided mind. Sorry about that. I too "went there" and then felt foolish for doing it. I will avoid doing so in the future also.

I actually came to check out the board to see what topics were being discussed before I sent my sister the link. I just "Amazoned" The Mindbody Prescription to her as she's been suffering dizzy spells and hand pain for some time. I am a recovering busybody big sister so I resisted the urge to "fix" this for her and didn't push her to get the book but then things got worse for her and I couldn't not try to help her. I hope that it works for her like it did for me - I'm pulling for her and if she decides to log on here I know you all will too.

Logan

PS - Tennis Tom I think it's great you got a computer just to visit this site. I wish my sister and I could get our dad to do the same but that's a long story...

Thank you Laura,

Glad to hear that the Bat Mitzva was a success and you're doing better.

Best wishes,
tt

Yes, the connection they always seem to miss is that pain is a concept of the mind. The pain is not in your body, its your mind trying to talk to your conscious self. The body is just sending the "something's wrong" signal, and the brain turns that signal into pain to "get your attention".

I agree, I've avoided responding to the troubled ones and will continue to do so. -Stryder

Hi Tenneis Tom and art and everybody.

One thing you forgot to mention in your "troublemaker" profile is that they never have a contact link!!

Cowards love anonymity. My pastor gets e-mails every week criticizing his pastoral method, and he reads them at church ONLY if the person has a contact(he never divulges their name)....he said he won't address cowards.

Also...I have a very strong suspicion that our old buddy is a lot of these people.I noticed he logged in as his old user ID to 'ask' a question

Having spent time as a criminal in my life,i have a little insight into how they think.....he probably thinks that appearing as himself while the havoc is going on is fooling us into NOT suspecting him.

I loved the link of people who didn't like Sarno.....they were posts by the same 10 users over and over.....hmmmm 10 against thousands.

just a thought

When I first discovered Sarno, being a goodist, I would reccommend him to anyone with obvious TMS symptoms. I would explain TMS theory in detail and 99% to 100% of the time it was a waste of time. People were not interested or needed their pain. I think it's natural for goodist TMS'ers to try. With time the zeal wears off. I may occasionaly mention Sarno to people now but I don't work myself into a lather about it.

I think the fact that we are deeply educated into believing that physicial pain = a physical source and that there is no connection between the mind and body are the main obstacles in getting TMS sufferers to accept the diagnosis of TMS. "How," the question is asked, "can something of a physcological origin cause so much physical pain?" What makes thinks more difficult for the sufferer is that the brian will chose an area in the body where "abnormalities" are found so as to fool the person into thinking that this is the source of their pain. The brain is brilliant as we fall for it time and again. The closer we get to the source of our pain the harder the brain will work to distract us.

Our dear "scientist" JJGold will never understand these things as he is too busy looking under a microscope. He cannot see the forest for the trees as it were.

Amen to this. The last thing most people want to hear is that their pain is psychosomatic. It's a widely misunderstood term and often leads to anger and defensiveness.

I actually hate recommending the books because I know in advance how it's probaby going to go. But I almost feel compelled to from a moral point of view. How can I not at least make one sincere effort when I feel that I absolutely know I'm privy to an astonishingly effect way to get past their pain.

Alas, the very last thing many people want is to lose their pain. They'll deny this to their dying day of course.

Ignoring a troublemaker like jjgold is easy, he makes it clear from the git-go where he is coming from. He thinks mindbody medicine is a crock and is trying to show us the light and return us to the path of invasive medicine. He probably thinks he is being helpful like when members of this forum post on medical sites about Sarno. The other type of trouble-maker is the one who is more cunning and for what ever perverse personal reason enjoys playing games and the attention they get. To them: get a life!

Sarno has said that his patients are of above average intellegence. I think he's right on that count. They can think for themselves and can discern the difference between black, white and gray. If something works or if it doesn't, they can see it for themselves. Sarno's devotees had enough intelegence to keep searching for answers to their chronic ailments when traditional and non-traditional methods failed--just doing personal science--trial and error and objective observation. Intelegence eventually lead them to Sarno by whatever route it took. In my case it was just perusing the shelves at the bookstore and spotting an interesting title called MIND OVER BACK. I read a few pages, it resonated, so I bought it. Anyone who does a little research on the web will eventually find Sarno.

I think Sarno's devotee's are individual types who take personal responsibilty. They like to get involved with fixing their problems rather than farming it out to a stranger. Sarno devotees are not in it for the secondary gain of shirking work or an insurance comapany pay-off.

After reading all of Sarno's books, I had an acquaintance do a web search of Sarno and found this forum. I bought a computer and learned how to access this board. I didn't post for several months until I felt comfortable doing so.

I would reccommend to anyone new to the board read, listen to and view as much Sarno material as they need to. Get examined by a TMS doctor. Read the archived posts. If their's something that isn't clear after doing that, then post.

The trouble-makers show a consistent pattern of stating minimal info in their bio's, asking for help, never taking it, never replying to or acknowleging any questions about their lives.

The number of people on the planet who are psycholgicaly capable of accepting the good doctor's theory is probably proportional to the number of doctors who have--in other words, very few. Proselytizing
Sarno will only lead to frustration and increased TMS rage.

Thanks Hilary,

We're never going to get full co-operation, but I think most of us are on board with this, at least in spirit..

Hi Art.

I apologize to all of you.I got sucked into it and got carried away.

I thought about it this morning and felt really foolish that I'd even "gone there" as my wife says.

I won't "go there" again. Promise

Art,

Good idea. I will refrain from feeding into it anymore.
