Posted - 06/26/2005 : 07:14:49 It's been a while since I last posted, I've just been too busy with the new growing season, but I thought I'd give a report on a friend.
My daughter shows dogs across the southeast U.S. and a man around 40 who she sold a puppy to wanted to learn how to show. Our family and his got well aquainted and became friends. My wife noticed at the shows that he was having a lot of pain and had to sit down reguarly. This was getting worse and she finally asked the problem. He had been diagnosed with a back problem and had suffered pain for several years on and off but it had been getting far worse in the last year.
He had gone the route of Physical Therapy with no help and it had gotten to the point where he could hardly work (he does remodeling and tile work). This made him more anxious and depressed and in turn this made the pain worse. I asked my wife if I should give him a call and talk to him about TMS. She said he looked like a perfect case but mentioned how much hope he was putting in a new injection procedure he was about to undergo and how he really believed that it was the answer, based on what his doctors said. Because of this I just held off.
A while later at another show my wife said he looked worse than ever. The procedure had not helped at all and he could barely work. He had to turn down numerous jobs because he physically couldn't do them because of the pain.
At this point I called him and told him briefly about Sarno, TMS, and my own experience. I said if he would like he could come by I'd give him a copy of the books and a DVD of the 20/20 program with John Stossel. The next day he stopped by and we talked a good while more and he went home to watch the DVD.
That was about a month ago and he's back to doing all his work again. He said he watched the 20/20 report and just sat there stunned, then he got mad. Mad at his brain, mad at his doctors, and mad at all the money he had wasted. He decided this was right and he wasn't really injured at all. He said the pain kept trying to come back but since he now knows it's not doing any real damage he just keeps working and it goes away.
How's he doing today? Well he came by Friday morning to do a job for us. He told my wife that if I would help he'd tile above the tub so we could take showers. We started around 9:00 AM and before we could tile we had to redo the plumbing. We got under the crawl space of the house and decided to do some major changes. It took us about 5 hours on our backs and crawling around to get the plumbing done. Then it took till 11:30 that night to get the tile up. The man's a machine. I'm in pretty good shape and it was all I could do to keep up. He came back the next morning and grouted the tile. I asked him how his back did. He said it would give him a twinge a few time but he would just ignore it and keep working. I'd say he's well on his way.
The amazing thing to me is that he has never even read one of Sarno's books through. I asked him and he said he read at one for a little while but that he really dosen't like to read. His cure came from watching the DVD. He saw it, said, "That"s right, that's me all over" and went from there.
One reason I've sort of stayed away from this board a while is that lots of times I see folks here that read too much I think. They are always reading about new things they may have on medical sites and use all kinds of medical terms. It seems to me this only serves to focus on yourself and the physical more, not less. My wife said it reminded her of a friend she used to have. They both had horses and my wife just rode hers and unless it had a bad limp or something she didn't do much for it medical wise. Her friend was always reading vet books and deciding her horse had all the terrible conditions in the book. My wife told me about one time when her friend read about a hoof condition then decided her horse had it. She kept picking and probing at it's hooves till the horse finally came up lame. The vet was called out and told her to just leave the horses feet alone. She did and it got back fine. I'd give the same advice to a lot of folks here. Leave the medical books alone and quit picking at it. Ignore it and it will go away. Maybe we're too smart for our own good sometimes and we should take a page from my friend. |

Posted - 06/26/2005 : 12:00:56 Thanks for that, Farmer Ed. I enjoyed reading your post.
I'm one of those who suffer from readingitis I'm afraid. My husband says I read too much and I think too much. He's a farmer's son, as it happens.
I used to scare myself silly, imagining that every disease around was incubating somewhere in my person. I knew that I shouldn't but every book, magazine or newpaper article drew me in like a magnet. Then I got the internet - need I say more?
Mind you, if I hadn't been such an avid reader and researcher of books - I probably wouldn't have come across Dr Sarno's work.
Since then, I have read widely on emotional causes of physical pain and on anxiety conditions and I know my wide reading has helped de-condition my brain and allowed me to get to where I am today.
I guess it all depends on how a person decides to read - if they look for books and other texts that are related to what they want to achieve, I think that's a positive thing. Horses for courses, I think - we need to customise our own recovery to fit in with our own personalities and interests.
Best wishes
Anne
This afterthough is not TMS related, but you saying your wife shows dogs made me think of it.
I often chat to the very glamorous lady at the Estee Lauder counter at a store I like - even buy things from her now and again. I mentioned to her the other day that it was a pity that Estee Lauder had stopped making their Herbal Hair Pack conditioner (the best hair conditioner ever - in my opinion).
She agreed, adding that she didn't know what she was going to use on her show dogs when her stock of it runs out. It cost £13 ($20 approx) a tub!

Posted - 06/26/2005 : 08:32:06 Hi FarmerEd
I too have had some experiences with friends whereby merely talking to them and explaining how I recovered, they have lost pain issues....usually my friends with really easy temperaments who don't need a bunch of charts and graphs. Also, one of my best friends has been pain free for years now...I told him about TMS,but he doesn't like to read,so I bought him the Sarno on tape thing...same deal...his back pain is gone...hasn't read any of the books.
I myself got better with HBP and have only browsed through Sano's other books.Last year I got into Louise Hay which is the same sort of Idea expanded, but that's where my TMS studies ended.
But you have a point....sitting and studying it TOO much is probably not a great idea,as Sarno himself in HBP says the physiology is pointless to even study and might even be counter productive.
peace
