i am a runner and have been dealing with groin pain since november. i laid off running since that time and tried every treatment. i even had surgery with the "best" doctor who invented a procedure that he has used on many many professional athletes. i had the surgery in march, 2005. well 8 weeks went by - usual recovery period and i didn't get better. it is now 3 months and guess what, the pain is the same as before the surgery. failed surgery....

i have this HUGE fear that i am going to end up as one of those chronic pain, post operative patients who has to deal with pain for the rest of my life. i am unsure as to what to do now as surgery usually is a last resort and it didn't work.

do you think i could consider this tms. i think it might be.

thanks

Of course ... I really don't understand your reasoning.

Forget about the surgery. In fact, since it didn't work, it should increase your confidence that this is really TMS.

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. Can't say for sure but it sounds like tms coz you didn't get better even after the surgery.

Also, I remember Sarno mentioning either in HBP or in the MBP Video that recovery is still possible for those who have had surgery becoz the body has this remarkable ability to heal itself no matter what but since I don't have my book at the moment I'm not able to quote from it. In fact I think it may be the video coz I remember someone in it asking Sarno for clarification about this point.

First thing to do is see a tms doctor since at this stage none of us can tell you for sure but keep an open mind and take it one step at a time.

Hs,

I don't see how surgery would have any impact at all. If it's TMS then by definition the operation wouldn't help as there's nothing to fix in a structural sense. On the other hand, you're still left with all the psychological and emotional issues that are at the root of the pain.

This TMS stuff is very powerful medicine. I think I mentioned I'm a runner as well. Over the past five years or so, I've just been beset by a seemingly endless laundry list of over-use injuries..one right after the other. Recently I decided to go back to Dr. Sarno's approach, something that had worked miracles with my back. I just had a much harder time ascribing over-use maladies to TMS as they seem so clearly physical in nature. But I'm just so sick of being hurt all the time, limping around the house with bags of frozen peas tied around my knees, and feet, and whatever else might be the injured body part du jour.

So far I've had good success with my hamstrings. The current battle is with a foot thing that I've had for almost a year now off and on. Sometimes it hurts to the point where I start to think I'm in real trouble with this stuff, but so far I've stuck with it and amazingly enough, no matter how much I challenge it, it doesn't get any worse. And sometimes it's a good deal better...

Go for it hsb, sounds like you've got nothing to lose...

It's a bit of a journey, this road to TMS. No one here can tell you whther it is or it isn't, but it sounds like it might be. The medical stuff hasn't helped, and there's something about the TMS diagnosis that sounds right to you. I assume you've read a book or two?

Would it be possible for you to see a TMS doctor? That might help you get a better handle on things. But in the meantime, or even if not, the great thing about TMS treatment is that you can do it yourself. Start thinking psychologically about your pain rather than structurally. Assume the pain is benign. Do things that are counter-intuitive, though gently at first. In other words, don't let the pain frighten you or deter you from certain activities. See what happens. I've got a feeling you might be in for a huge surprise.

If it is TMS the fear itself will perpetuate the pain. Have you read the books? you are thinking about the physical rather the emotional cause.

There is a condition in Sarno's book whereby he says that groin pain can be the result of nerve TMS stuff. If you haven't read the book, try re-reading it. I don't know if your situation is TMS but it's worth a look at.
